The Carthusian horse, protagonist of the new tenth of an ounce of gold bullion

After the issues of tenths of an ounce bulliondedicated to the Iberian lynx and the bull, 2024 brings our latest protagonist, the Carthusian horse. With this third issue, the FNMT-RCM continues a collection that has been a great success so far and that perfectly complements the issues of its older sisters, the gold bullion ounces.

The Carthusian horse has been one of the symbols of Spanish character and culture for centuries. This branch of the Spanish horse has one of the oldest genealogies, not only in Spain and the European continent, but also in the world.

Obverse

On the obverse is the famous Columnario del Real de a Ocho, known in many parts of the world as the Spanish dollar. It was the first currency used worldwide for more than two centuries, at the height of the Spanish Empire.

Accompanying the central image of the crowned hemispheres of the world, the columns shown —also present in the Spanish coat of arms— represent the columns that Hercules placed on both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar to mark the end of the world, according to Greek mythology. The inscription Plus Ultra, which runs along both columns means "beyond", in a clear reference to the discovery of the New World.

There is also the quadruple latent image and the legend: "FELIPE VI REY DE ESPAÑA", at the top, and "1/10 ONZA 999,9 ORO", at the bottom. Around the motifs and legends, a pinion graph.

Reverse

The reverse shows a splendid specimen of a trotting Carthusian horse, with the horse fluttering with the movement.

The face value of 1.5 EURO appears at the top, while the legend "CABALLO CARTUJANO" surrounds the coin on the left, following the line of the coin.

Between the legend and the image of the horse, there is the mint mark and the year of issue 2024.

As on the obverse, all the designs and legends are surrounded by a pinion graph.
